There has been a Wheatsheaf on this site for well over one hundred years. The original pub burned down in the 1920s. It is believed that this happened in 1927. This original pub was a thatched building which stood much closer to the road than the current one.
There are several photographs and paintings of the original pub showing the two large trees that stood directly in front of it.
The current building was built following the fire and was probably opened in 1929. As far as we can establish nobody in Charles Wells knows the exact dates.
As far as we know the pub has always been a Charles Wells pub, in fact one of the photographs dated circa 1890 shows the “Wells” sign clearly on the end of the building.
